When I visited the Prado gallery in Madrid in 2003, I stumbled upon Francisco de Goya's black paintings. I was impressed by the dark, haunting images and probably spent more time here than at the paintings I planned to see. In 2006, I transformed the notes I took into blog posts, and later an article series on my website. This lens introduces the black paintings and my article series.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (March 30, 1746 April 16, 1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown and a chronicler of history. He has been regarded both as the last of the Old Masters and as the first of the moderns.
