Jan van Eyck ( 1395 - 9 July 1441), was born in Maaseik, Burgundian Netherlands. He was a flemish painter and considered one of the best Europeon painters of the 15th century. He was one of the earliest advocate of oil based paints and was traditionally regarded as the "father of oil painting".

Jan van Eyck (c. 1395 - c. 1441) was the greatest Flemish painter of the 15th century. He painted in realist style and was one of the first painters to use oil effectively. His paintings show excellent detail and brilliant color and finish. His best-known paintings include The Adoration of the Holy Lamb (1432) and The Betrothal of of the Arnolfini (1434).
