Alan Garner - a True British Craftsman
The author, Alan Garner, is not heard of often these days, but his books have stood the test of time as milestones in British writing. I first read his work as a child and my experiences of Elidor and The Owl Service have coloured my reading habits ever since. I love the way that Alan Garner re-injects the old legends back into modern life. He is deeply connected to the Cheshire landscape in particular and his family have lived in the area for hundreds of years.

Alan Garner's Elidor
Elidor is the story of Roland, Helen, David and Nicholas - 4 children entrusted to guard 4 treasures. The fate of these treasures (a sword, a spear, a stone and a cup) will decide whether Elidor will be saved or forever lost in darkness. Elidor was first published in the 1960s and is a story for older children, featuring unicorns, strange fiddlers, monsters and treasure. It was turned into a childrens' TV series in the early 90s.
