I've never been a boy, but I've known- and lived with- a lot of them. I have discovered that most of them dislike reading and writing. I can't help with the writing part, but of my three sons, only one liked to read, and I was forced to try to save my sanity by finding out what they would read without whining. One of my gripes about excessive homework is that it doesn't allow kids enough time to read for pleasure. Despite the stereotype of book-averse boys, my sons love to come home and read, especially on cold days where cozying up with a warm blanket and cat is just what the doctor ordered :) Boys do read, in this house anyway, and for about a year, historical fiction has been the preferred genre of one of my twin 12-year-olds. The Hardy Boys mystries books were the first set of books I remember reading in 3rd grade. They were may favorite books because of the mysteries and the brothers. I certainly enjoyed tons of other books as a kid including, the Bobsie Twins, and when I got older, Harry Potter Books were great to read. This is our version of a "hopechest" for boys and contains only the finest, highest quality hand tools. Along the same lines, we have also begun a library for each of them by purchasing the highest quality books we can find. We hope that by reading these books, both now and in the future, our sons will develop the skills needed to be sucessful men- husbands, fathers, leaders. ...
