Out Of The Dust
Karen Hesse's Amazing Free Verse Novel - Out of the Dust
This amazing book, by Karen Hesse, is the story of how a girl overcame extremely difficult adversities during the dust bowl. Written in free verse poetry, it is quick read, but for so few words, it can truly paint a mental picture. Out of The Dust was the Newbery Medal winner in 1998. The story is set in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. The rains have stopped and dust bowl set in, and a little girl struggles to survive and thrive while being presented with obstacle after obstacle.

Island of Ghosts
A Novel of Roman Britain
In the Caucasus Mountains are the little republics of the Ossetians, places small enough, and obscure enough, to be almost forgotten by the world. But here, stories are still told of their ancestors, the Alans, and songs are sung of their greatest heroes, the Narts. Strangely, many of the stories told of the Narts have a sense of deja vu, we know these stories somehow, and they are especially familiar to readers of the legends of Britain and the hard years just after the Romans went home. H...

The Thousand Autumns Of Jacob De Zoet
A Historical Novel, a Romance and an Action Story
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas, is a stunning novel by any measure. It is beautifully written with such believable characters that I loved and hated them according to their actions and personalities. The story is set in Japan at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. It tells a story of forbidden love, corruption among traders, unspeakable evil carried out in the guise of religion, and the interaction of people of differe...

Fall Of Giants By Ken Follett
Life In The Era Of "The Great War"
The first volume of Follett's planned "Century Trilogy", Fall of Giants is no mere lead-in. Although readers will look forward to discovering the next chapters of the characters' lives; there are no loose ends here to leave us in the lurch. Like all Ken Follett novels, it's long--almost 1000 pages--and richly detailed. This is Follett's way of letting his readers understand the forces that shape both history and the characters--who are many and varied. The story begins in Wales in the years...

The Magic Of Ordinary Days
A Wonderful Story of How Love Grows From Nothing
I read this book after seeing the movie, something I have NEVER done in the past. Usually after seeing a movie, I think "Well I know what happens, so why bother". This story is completely different. It is not about where it ends up, but how it got there. This is the story of an evolving relationship. I highly suggest The Magic Of Ordinary Days for everyone who loves to see love bloom. The story takes place in 1944, when after her mother's death, Olivia Dunn (Livy) finds herself pregnant...

Council Of The Cursed
Another Sister Fidelma Mystery
I'm thrilled with the latest Fidelma novel! Council of the Cursed. Sister Fidelma finds herself in tense situations where she has to use her wits, her deductive abilities and her knowledge of both law and human nature to solve mysteries which can decide the fate of peoples and nations. The historical element in these novels is very strong. I've learned a lot from the Fidelma novels, such as the surprisingly high legal status of women in Ancient Ireland. As mysteries the Fidelma books are c...

Wolf Hall - Prize Winning Novel
Wolf Hall - Intrigue in the Court of King Henry VIII
The historical novel Wolf Hall, written by Hilary Mantel, not only won the prestigious Man Booker Prize in the UK, it is also a wonderful and insightful story set in the Court of King Henry VIII. It tells the story of Thomas Cromwell, one of Henry VIII's closest and most trusted advisors while the king was trying to divorce Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. Cromwell was also instrumental in the Reformation of the church in England and the split from the Roman Catholic Church. So far...

Alexander and Alestria
Sheer escapism in an improbable Romp
Alexander and Alestria is the story of Alexander the Great, who conquered the known world, and Alestria, Queen of the Amazons. Their love, extravagant and deeply passionate, erupts against an exotic backdrop of warfare and political turmoil. The story sweeps from Ancient Greece to Egypt, to Ancient Persia and deep into the mysterious kingdoms of India. These two lovers share a passion based entirely on fate rather than mutual regard. What else could they share in this mythic world of improb...

My Unique Biblical fiction Novel
My Biblical novel, unique among other Biblical novels:
I'm making this page about my unique Biblical novel because I feel that, even though many Biblical novels have been published over the years, mine is truly the most unique of all Biblical novels for several reasons related to both content and style, which I will outline in more detail in the amazon spotlight module below*. By the term "Biblical novel", I mean primarily novels that take place in Biblical times. Yet, it the "Biblical novels I have read" module, I chose to include "In The Twinkl...
