Of course you could dive right in to C++, but once you know one programming language it is much easier to learn a new one. A good beginner's programming book helps to learn programming fundamentals and you'll find many beginning programming books here that don't assume you know another programming language first. While learning a language, paradigm, technology or tool perfectly is desirable if you are a professional programmer, what happens if you need the flexibility to be able to apply your knowledge to any language, paradigm, technology or tool? Answer - you come here. Where we give you just enough to accomplish something useful, but leave it to you to figure out if that's enough. We think it is; no use trying to paint the Sistine Chapel if all you want to do is make comic books, is there?




Knuth says programming languages are all alike (OK, he says they have several properties in common.) Still, it is a lot easier to learn a second or "N+1th" language than it is to learn the first one. Many languages are available, each with strengths and weaknesses -- and fervent fans. Knowing what you intend your progams to do makes picking an appropriate language a lot easier.
