He was a man who evoked strong emotions whenever his name was mentioned. Either you believed in him or you despised him. I like to think that you have to look at things within the context of the times. It's of no use looking at things which have already evolved and then trying to pass judgement. Or in other words, perhaps someone who went to Africa in 1890 sees things differently to someone brought up in today's world. While celebrating his birthday in Chicago, President Obama told donors at a fundraiser "We knew the road ahead was going to be difficult, that the climb was going to be steep. I have to admit, I didn't know how steep the climb was going to be."
