One of the hardest topics to think about is the period of slavery in America. It was only one of the reasons that the Civil War in the United States became the ugliest war in the country's history. It truly brings tears to my eyes and makes my stomach queasy thinking of all the bloodshed, heartache...

Paine To Prince There were over 1000 General Officers during the American Civil War. In the union Army for most of the war there were only Brigadier and Major Generals. This was mainly out of respect to General George Washington, who held the rank of Lieutenant General during the American Revolution. The first office to hold the rank of Lieutenant General after Congress reactivated it was U. S. Grant.
