Origin of Words
Etymology of Common Words
Etymology and the etymological study of the origin of words is a vast and interesting subject. Origins of most English words are from French, Greek and Latin. English today is a global language, and is a collage of an eclectic mix of words originating from German, Gaelic, Norse, Swedish, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit, Hindi and many other languages. Compiled in this page are the word origins and a few dictionary meanings, mostly from languages other than French, Greek and Latin. This pa...

Easy English
English isn't that hard once you get to know it.
Easy English? Is that an oxymoron? You may think so now, but not after you've spent some time looking through my lens. I love language, grammar and etymology. I read grammar books for fun. Yes, I'm a word nerd that way. But my nerdiness is your gain because I'll point you in the right direction to help you learn how to write and speak better so that when you're writing that term paper or giving that speech, you won't sound like a certain former president who can't even pronounce the word "nuc...

English as a second Language - Tips to help improve your speaking and writing
How can You help me improve my English speaking and writing skills?
I work as a volunteer helping women to learn the English language. I originally started volunteering as part of my professional practice module whilst I was doing my degree in English. I enjoyed the classes so much and have continued to volunteer, that was two years ago. The class I work with are just women however there are also classes that are run for males only too. The women that I have worked with have come to the UK from all corners of the world and many were professional working women...

English as a second language: a personal account
Squidoo teaches me English
Squidoo is quite good for my English. All those lovely homey topics. My English is excellent (if I may say so myself) when it comes to complicated issues. I sometimes feel it's easier to talk about spirituality in English than my native Dutch: I've been reading about these topics in English for quite a while now. But the weather. Will I ever feel comfortable using words like 'sleet' or 'hail'? I'm not even sure about the spelling (though my spelling checker isn't protesting)

Loose vs Lose
A Losing Battle Against Loose Spelling
I have made it my goal in life to teach folks the difference between the words 'lose' and 'loose.' I go crazy when I see them being misused. It's not that hard! This lens will, hopefully, provide enough tricks to remember which to use! Be sure to try out the quizzes and let me know in the poll if I taught you anything today. (Intro image: does that mean you're attempting to take the shortest route?)

Gifts for English Teachers and English Majors
NEW!
Here are my favorite gift ideas for people who study or teach English class. I've done my best to find unique gift ideas that you can buy online from reputable websites like Amazon and Cafepress. These would make great gifts for end of the school year, graduation, Christmas, holiday, birthday, etc. Some of these are pretty darn cute! I hope you find something you like. Photo Credit
