Tamales are ridiculously easy to make, and oh, so wonderful to eat fresh from the steamer, right from their corn husk wrappers. They're not something you can make just a few of, but fortunately, they store well, and are just as tasty when reheated. Most tamales are made with a dough made from masa harina, a very finely ground flour made from corn that has been dried, cooked, ground up and dried again. Don't confuse this with corn meal, which has a different flavor and texture. Masa can be pu...

My personal story of vegetarian living
I was an ordinary omnivore until 1997 when I came to Punjab, India to live with my Dad. My Stepmom is a vegetarian (pretty strict too) so I became a vegetarian like her. I didn't have any trouble adjusting although I miss the odd hamburger and hotdog once in a while.

How many times does a vegetarian hear, "If you're going to eat that, why be vegetarian at all?" I don't understand when people criticize veggie burgers and other foods with a meat-like taste or texture. People don't become vegetarian because they dislike the taste of meat. They become vegetarian because they're passionate about something -- whether it's animal rights, the health of their planet, the health of their own bodies. As for me, I don't like to eat sentient creatures. I've been a ve...

A personal view
Nothing makes me feel more opulent and well-cared-for than to see a trug of beautifully fresh vegetables come in from our organic (and biodynamic) garden. There is something sensuous and luxurious about the sight and my physiological reaction. I assume it's hitting the endorphin and serotonin buttons. Take a look at the picture and say that's not nice. The fact that it' chemical-free and grown by ourselves just adds to the pleasure. Before the veg comes in, however, there's a great deal of...
'Rougaille'
'Rougaille' is a popular dish here in Mauritius. It is prepared with tomatoes, chillies, onion, etc. Normally, it is served in weddings along with 'puris', 'pharatas', and with rice. It is also served in other ceremonies. It can be served with any other curries too. It is a delicious dish and is mostly appreciated here by both adults and children. It is very easy to cook. What is so great with it, is, you can add Mauritian 'gateau piment', soya chunks, fresh peas at the end when the 'Rougai...
