Credits for alll photos in this lens:http://www.morguefile.com unless otherwise noted Do you have a friend or relative who has Alzheimers? Have you ever felt the despair of visiting someone you love, who no longer knows who you are? Someone you may barely recognize anymore? As a nurse, I spent years caring for people with Alzheimer's. Dealing with Alzheimers - my personal experiences
A personal account of dealing with Alzheimer's disease
This lens is a tribute to a strong, intelligent woman who struggles with Alzheimer's - and to her kids (my uncles and mother) who fight to keep her life as fulfilling as possible. The lens is written in chronological order: it's my experience of the starting of the problems and then how they progress. This is my grandmother to the left, two years after diagnosis.Image above © Katinka Hesselink

Gifts for People with Alzheimer's
Gifts for People with Alzheimer's
Welcome to my Holiday Gift Guide!
My Grandma has Alzheimer's. It is hard to know what to get, because she has trouble knowing what to do with the gifts that she receives. Sometimes the presents sit around unused for months. Favorite food gifts mostly go uneaten, and other presents often end up unused or go missing (hidden for safe keeping someplace.... but no one knows where). It is typified by memory loss, confusion, short & long term memory issues, mood swings and other problems. It places huge burdens on carers and despite many hundreds of pharmaceutical drug trials as yet there is no treatment or cure. So my principal belief is go back to nature. That is what this lens is about. Alzheimer's is character...

Alzheimer's, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, allergies and countless other medical problems may be related to 'Inflammation" in your body. Inflammation is defined as 'a response of body tissues to injury or irritation; characterized by pain and swelling and redness and heat'. MIT scientists have confirmed that chronic inflammation of the intestine or stomach can damage DNA, increasing the risk of cancer and heart disease If this lens doesn't do anything more than get one person to h...

Alzheimer's - Preventing It (or slowing it down)
There are many risk factors associated with the development of Alzheimer's and one of the most common is the concept of Insulin Resistance. Insulin resistance probably affects 50% of the population even before it is diagnosed. The other risk increasing factors around Alzheimer's are discussed a little later but what is clear is that we can avoid some of the risk factors by changing our diets.
