Of all the Pagan Sabbats, Samhain is perhaps the best known and the least understood. Samhain (pronounced sow-ain) is the 8th Pagan Sabbat in the Wheel of the Year. It marks the end of Summer and the Beginning of Winter. It is time to honour those who have died and finalise preparations for the coming winter.

In the Celtic calendar, Samhain marked the beginning of Winter and the end of Summer. This was also the end of the third major harvest of the year. Animals had been brought back down from the pasture, to be housed once more in the barns and fenced in pens.
