Fringed Tulips are perhaps the most unusual tulips of all, with their candy colors and frothy edges. They are still quite rare and not, it has to be said, universally loved. They are gaining in popularity though, especially some of the new single color double varieties. Fringed Tulips are sometimes called Crispa Tulips.

Double Late Tulips have extraordinary petal-packed bulging buds that explode into massive Peony-like flowers (up to 4", 10cm across). Fosteriana Tulips - Emperor Tulips
The best thing about Fosteriana tulips is their simple airy flowers. Extra-wide petals unfold from tight buds, carried mid height (8", 20cm to 10" 25cm). The original perennial tulips, they have been bred from Tulipa fosteriana, which grows wild in Central Asia. That's why they, and their descendants, Darwin Hybrid Tulips, are so good at naturalizing - spreading and multiplying year after year. Strong stems also help them stand up to strong winds.
