Local: Livermore Wine

One of California's Oldest Wine Regions
Located just an hour east of San Francisco, the Livermore Valley is home to over three dozen wineries, with lush vineyards covering more than 5,000 acres. Wineries range from small, family-owned operations to historic leaders of the California wine industry, such as Concannon and Wente. In addition to tasting rooms and events held at individual wineries, there are a number of major events, including the Annual Harvest Wine Celebration traditionally held over Labor Day weekend. More than 500,0...

Elliston Vineyards
At Elliston Vineyards, an idyllic country locale offers visitors an old world experience in the Livermore Valley. Indeed, the old stone house that adorns their label once served as an antique shop, and is filled with exquisite antique furniture to this day. The mansion was completed in 1890 by goldseeker, turned supplier to the goldseekers, Henry Hiram Ellis.

Livermore Valley Wine Country User's Guide
Welcome to the user's guide for the Livermore Valley Wine Country series on Squidoo. There are over 50 lenses in the series, so I do appreciate hearing from winery staff when information needs to be updated. Each of the wineries is promoted on every other winery lens. This alone accounts for nearly 2,000 links between the various lenses. Perhaps you discovered yours by doing a Google search, as some winery owners have. If so, fabulous! That's the goal... to promote the Livermore Valley Wine C...

Murrieta's Well
Legend meets romance at picturesque Murrieta's Well. The winery is named for the legendary outlaw, Joaquin Murieta, who was known to have camped out on the property during the Gold Rush era. A winery was built on the site in the 1880s, and was brought back to life more than a century later, continuing a tradition of handcrafting unique premium wines.

The Singing Winemaker at Tesla Vintners
Uniquely situated on the main winery trail between Livermore winemaking legends Concannon and Wente, Tesla Vintners has emerged as a popular spot for locals to relax and catch a breathtaking sunset on the deck or patio. The motto at Tesla Vintners is to celebrate truth, beauty and goodness through wine, music and art. There is evidence of this everywhere you look, from the paintings on the tasting room walls to the outdoor stage where music fills the air.

Battaion Cellars
Battaion Cellars is the first winery in the Livermore Valley to specialize in premium sparkling wines. The winery offers several exclusive products fermented in the traditional methode champenoise style, ranging from aged vintages to rose and brut sparkling wines. Private dinners and food pairings combining Battaion Cellars sparkling wines and menu items prepared by a master chef, may also be arranged anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Wente Vineyards
In 1981, the Wente family purchased the long abandoned Cresta Blanca winery site. Few views are as breathtaking in Livermore, and with a lot of hard work and determination the winery began to reclaim its former elegance. The grounds were replanted with vineyards at the foot of the hillsides, adding even more beauty to the natural surroundings. Most exciting was restoration of the sandstone caves, which once again provide ideal resting quarters for sparkling wines as they age and mature. When ...

McGrail Vineyards
McGrail Vineyards was established in 1999, and has sought to produce the finest Cabernet grapes in the Livermore Valley. The vineyard uses a technique called green harvesting, which means that some of the grapes on each vine are discarded before they ripen. Once ripened, the lower quality grapes are also discarded, leaving only the very best grapes for the crush. These grapes are then aged in French, American, and Russian Oak barrels for several months. Finally, all three barrels are blended ...

Wood Family Vineyards
Though fairly new on the Livermore winemaking scene, Wood Family wines have already earned numerous awards at county and state fair competitions. This early interest led Sunset magazine to choose the 2002 Syrah for its wine club in 2005. Livermore Valley grapes are used exclusively for winemaking, due to unique qualities of the soil and climate. At harvest time, grapes are hand picked during the cool evening/early morning hours.
