Autism
What is Autism?
Many people don't really understand autism and how it effects people's lives. As a teacher for many years, I have watched what I believe is a rise in autism in our children and I would like more people to be aware of what autism really is, and how to recognize the signs.
Kids with Autism need a lot of visual support -expensive visual support
If you have a child with autism or any other special need, and are wondering where to find freeprintable visual cues, behavior charts or reward charts, then you have come to the right place! I am a mother to a wonderful 7 year old boy who got his first diagnosis around 12 months. We were beyond broke, living on a single income of an E-3 in the Army in one of the most expensive cities in the US. I started hunting for all of the things that were recommended by the therapists- behavior charts,...

Chores are great for ALL kids!
It has long been known that having children do chores helps them build confidence, learn respect, improve behavior and encourage responsibility. Did you know that Autism Awareness month is in April?
Autism awareness month is here! What is the point? Many people still do not fully understand what Autism is, much less understand the fine differences between various ASD-like disorders and Aspergers. During April, many charitable organizations and autism specialists help people understand more about the disorder as well as raising money for research. Currently it is not known what causes ASD. I have written this lens to give parents who believe their child may have ASD a basic idea of how to proceed from here, what to expect and what kinds of choices you may face. This certainly i...
Autism has many parents feeling desperate, leaving them and their kids vulnerable.
With autism on the rise, many parents are afraid that their child could be next. Although a lot of parents handle it very well through acceptance, understanding, love and advocacy, there is a period of agonizing over questions such as why, how can it be cured etc. There are too many who fall prey to those who would take advantage of such desperation. It is normal to go through a phase of questioning, but it is imperative that parents use caution when dealing with therapies, religion and other...
We have virtually eliminated tantrums from our Son's life!
It certainly was not easy. It was also not quick. This article is intended as a reminder to parents of kids with Autism to be persistent- keep doing the therapies and keep enduring those humiliating moments at the grocery store. It took years... four years to be more exact. Four years of therapy for him, and four years of torment for us- torment that I would endure again a thousand times over having seen the result! Aside from the therapy I believe that one of the most important factors was...
