One of the ways I taught my daughter to read, was to show her a photograph and then write down what she said, under the photo; I took dictation. It's a fun way to make personal reading books; using family photos, magazine pictures, and such. I started this when my daughter first started talking, and continued it through her early years of writing herself. At 17, she still enjoyed looking back at those early dictation books.
