Dragonfly
I don't know what it is about dragonflies but I really love them. There is something mystical and magical about them. In fact native americans consider dragonfly medicine to be about the dreamtime and what is illusionary or a facade that we accept as reality. They have beautiful iridescent wings that are unique colors. According to Jamie Sams who wrote Medicine Cards, she says this about dragonfly: Dragonfly's shifting of color, energy, form, and movement explodes into the mind of the obse...

Dragonflies, The Graceful Migrators * Dragonfly Gifts and Decor
I do remember that we called dragonflies "darning needles" when I was growing up!
Dragonflies are graceful flying insects that migrate like birds! Ah, dragonflies, the graceful migrators. Growing up in Northeastern Ohio, we really didn't see a lot of dragonflies like we do today in Northeastern Florida. My inspiration for this lens on dragonflies occurred on August 27, 2007 at 2:15pm in the afternoon as I was driving out of our community. I saw something I've never seen before -- literally hundreds and hundreds of dragonflies gracefully flying back and forth across the en...

Dragonflies and Damselflies - A begginers guide
What is the difference between a Dragonfly and a Damselfly?
I will be the first to admit that up until a few years ago, I called all dragonflies and damselflies "Dragonflies". It wasn't until one of my trips to rural Arkansas, USA that I began to really take an interest in these fascinating insects; they were so profilic in the area that I was visiting that they were impossible to miss and while my boyfriend was fishing, I would choose instead to hunt for dragons to shoot (okay, I would look for dragonflies that I could shoot with my camera). At firs...

The Dragonfly Whisperer
If We Could Talk to the Dragonflies...Just Imagine It!
In my lens, Dragonflies and Country Kids, I wrote about a happy memory involving the way my sister and I used to entice dragonflies to our fingers. The question was asked, "How do you do that?" It's easy! First, you need some dragonflies...then you need a technique. This lens will show you how easily you can attract dragonflies to your backyard - and without breaking the bank to do it. You'll also discover what to do to lure the dragonflies to your waiting fingertip. If you're ready to begin...

About The Dragonfly
The Dragonfly
Photo Credit Patricia Penner I don't know about you but I love dragonflies. I love to watch them fly? They are so graceful and fast. Have you ever watched one fly. They seem to glide. Yet you wonder how they fly with four wings. I've watched in awe as they seem to skip on the water. I had the not so great experience of being up close and personal with one. It was a hot summer day so I opened up the patio door to let some fresh air in and I dragonfly flew in. I love dragonflies but that sucke...

Dragonflies - also called the Mosquito Hawks - Tiny Ferocious Predators!
What's amazing about dragonflies is that when you see one zipping by, you are seeing one in the last few weeks or days (or minutes) of its life. The previous 90% of its life has been as a "nymph" -- underwater. And underwater, it's also a lethal predator. A dragonfly is a ferocious underwater predator that attacks and eats minnows, tadpoles, mosquito larvae, and other small aquatic life. Dragonflies can spend up to 3 years (depending on which species) as a nymph ... and when they finally cr...

Ferocious predators of the insect world - the dragonflies are fascinating creatures!
When I was a kid growing up in Montana, our family would sometimes spend time down at the lake... and I'd be terrified at these huge insects buzzing overhead. We'd watch as the large dragonflies would zip through the sky and go after moths and mosquitos and other flying insects. But when they'd buzz over our heads, we felt the need to duck and cover--because they were so large and scary looking. Of course, their name, "dragonfly" was scary enough. And the noise of their wings vibrating in th...
