Mystery Duck? We first saw a creature similar to this odd looking bird (in the photo) just walking around in the forest in our yard in Washington state. We had no idea what it was. We searched bird books and ornithology websites. We called family members. Nobody knew. Finally we found the name of and information on this very interesting duck that looks a bit like a cross between a duck and a chicken, with red 'rooster comb' material on its face or around its eyes. Male Mandarin ducks are considered by many to be the most beautifully colored of all waterfowl. After the breeding season the male molts all their beautiful feathers and looks almost like a female Mandarin. Other common names -- French: Canard mandarin; German: Mandarinente; Spanish: Pato Mandarn. Mandarin Ducks are monogamous.
