Similarly to other towns on the Dalmatian coast, Sibenik is a picturesque place with atmospheric old streets, intoxicating architecture and a buzzing sea promenade. From its fortresses which were designed to defend against attacks by the Turks, there is a terrific view of the town. The jewel of the old town is arguably the Cathedral of St James, a masterpiece of Renaissance and Gothic architecture. The cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
